Member Feature - Michaela Smart

We're thrilled to spotlight one of the incredible individuals who make up our vibrant community at Table Space. Our members bring unique talents, diverse perspectives, and boundless creativity to our shared environment.

Today, we're excited to kick off our Member Spotlight series with Michaela, owner of Michaela Smart Brows. In 2018, she opened her own studio, driven by a passion to provide a diverse range of semi-permanant services beyond microblading, such as micropigmentation, top surgery and gender-affirming tattooing, and areola restoration. She is always looking to learn new skills to offer her clients.

Table Space:  Did you encounter any struggles or navigate any challenges in the 5 years you have been in business?

Michaela: Starting my dream business was really tough, especially because I had to deal with my own doubts and push myself to move fast. Even when things were going well, I couldn't help feeling like it wasn't enough. Having ADHD, I had to be careful not to take on too much, but I knew my strengths and used them to keep my business running smoothly with the right help, like accountants, a manager, and social media people.

Before I got a manager to help out, I was so stressed and busy that I avoided calls, emails, and messages from clients. I was spending too much time on my phone, getting anxious and overwhelmed. I love being an artist and working with my clients directly, but I ended up ignoring my family and my own needs because I was too caught up in handling the business side of things.

What makes my story unique is that I started from nothing. I didn't have any business training or money to start with. I was a single mom, with no family around to support me in the city. This journey, with all its ups and downs, really shows how much I had to overcome to get my business off the ground.

Table Space: Every business has a unique value proposition, something that sets them apart. What do you think yours is?

Michaela: Thinking about what makes me special, I realize how much my own struggles, especially with learning and attention issues, have helped shape who I am. I found school hard from a young age and was told I had ADHD when I was 8. Sadly, nothing was really done about it, and I grew up thinking I just wasn't smart. It was only when I became an adult that I was diagnosed again, this time with ADD. This new understanding made me see my past in a different light.

Instead of slowing me down, my ADD has actually helped me be more spontaneous and go after my dreams without being scared of failing. I love my work deeply, and nothing beats the happiness and satisfaction I get from making a difference in my clients' lives. I'm always thankful for where I am today and for the chances I've taken in my career.

In the world of permanent makeup, being good at science is important, but you also need to be creative and artistic. If not, you might change someone's looks in a way they don't like. Getting the right eyebrow shape can make someone look younger and more polished, but the wrong shape can make them look angry, sad, or surprised. My ADD has turned out to be a secret strength, giving me a mix of creativity, carefulness, and bravery that makes me stand out in my field.

Table Space. Being a business owner can be full of ups and downs, what do you do to unwind and relax?

Michaela: Running a business is definitely a rollercoaster ride with its highs and lows. To relax and take a break, I'm still learning how to make time for myself without feeling bad about it. As of February 2024, I've been sober for two years, which has really empowered me to look after both myself and my daughter with more love and attention. I'm a big fan of spending time in nature, like going camping, traveling, fixing up my house, and taking my dog for walks. I also keep a gratitude journal that I write in every day, noting down what I'm thankful for. In it, I reflect on my strengths and set personal goals. It's all part of my ongoing journey to grow and improve myself from the inside out.

Table Space. How can customers work with or support you? What do you offer?

Michaela: Customers can support and collaborate with us in numerous significant ways, notably by taking advantage of the extensive range of services we provide. We specialize in permanent makeup services including brows, lips, areola tattoos, eyeliner, and freckles, as well as brow services such as shaping, tints, henna, and brow lamination. Additionally, we offer eyelash services, encompassing lash lifts and tints, and eyelash extensions. Choosing any of these services offers a direct way to discover what we have to offer, ensuring tailored care to help you achieve your desired look.

Your support extends beyond merely booking services; sharing your positive experiences through referrals is incredibly valuable in expanding our trusted client base. Offering feedback serves as another form of collaboration, helping us refine our services to better meet your needs. Engaging with our business on social media by liking, commenting, and sharing posts can markedly increase our visibility and welcome new clients. Table Space. Lastly, what would you say to entrepreneurs who are just starting?

Michaela: Don't stress over others' opinions. Their judgments often reflect their own insecurities, not your worth. Be true to yourself. I've created tons of wonderful, meaningful connections with my clients that I will cherish forever. Don't hesitate to ask for advice or guidance from fellow entrepreneurs. Jot down your goals and life aspirations and always speak kindly to yourself.

Explore podcasts, books, and audiobooks on business, self-improvement, and positive affirmations. Fear of failure is natural, but see each setback as a valuable lesson.
